Linda was born on August 18, 1940, in Big Spring to H B and Mary Etta (Sample) Pettus. Her father was a gin manager and the family moved from gin to gin. She attended school in Knott, Big Spring, Brown, Ackerley, Garden City, South Taylor, and had the honor of being the first Jim Ned Valedictorian. She then attended Tarleton State College for two years and finished her bachelor's in education at North Texas State. Linda taught school at Elmdale and then for Jim Ned. She retired early to help her husband, Loy, with the farm and their children.
