Joe Viterbo Dimas

July 21, 1939 — April 6, 2020

Joe V. Dimas, 80, of Abilene, TX and longtime resident of Bernal & Mora, New Mexico passed away on Monday, April 6, 2020 after a second battle with cancer. He was loved by anyone that came to know him, directed by Fry~Smith Funeral Home, Tuscola.

Joe was born in Blanchard, New Mexico on July 21, 1939 to Margarito and Lucita (Montoya) Dimas. He attended school at the local schoolhouse until the 8th grade. As most men of his generation did, he decided it was time to get out and work. When he was old enough, he joined the Army and served two years active duty, two years stand-by, and two years reserve. When he left the military, he was a “Jack of All Trades.” He was a farmer, ranch manager/hand, a bartender, security/sheriff officer, electrician, teacher for small engines, painter, mechanic, laundry delivery, and did other odd jobs to make ends meet.He loved his family and did what he could to take care of them.

In his retirement, he lived with his granddaughter Jessica Marquez, her husband Justin Marquez (The working man) and her family. Joe loved giving nicknames to all the little ones. He loved watching his great-grandchildren Justin (JW), Jeremy (Chummy) and Jayce (Colors) grow and teaching them whatever they were willing to learn. His personality was contagious and made even the most un-social person want to spark up a conversation. He had a way to make you happy with a simple hug or would brighten your day with a not so clean joke.

Joe is preceded in death by his parents, Margarito and Lucita Dimas. His brothers, Henry Dimas, Ruben Dimas; and his step-daughter, Loraine (Lulu) Vigil. He is survived by longtime partner, Susie R. Vigil and her family. Daughter, Jolene Ortiz and her family; brothers, Billy Dimas, Alex Dimas and family, and Tony Dimas and family, his sisters, Tommie Romo and family, Inez Sierra and family, Eva Padilla and family, Dolores Sanchez and family, Nena Sanchez and family, and Rose Dimas and family. As well as, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends that are more like family.

If you knew Joe he would want everyone to remember “Be careful on the road” and “Don’t work to hard but don’t hardly work”.

A memorial service will be planned for a later date in New Mexico where he will be laid to rest. Please contact with Jessica Marquez by email at jessica.marquez09@gmail or through Facebook.
