Bonita was born in Slayton, Minnesota to Arnold and Etta (Sowden) Severeid on August 13, 1949. She was the eighth child out of the eleven children that Arnold and Etta raised. She grew up in Lake Wilson Minnesota, where she graduated from high school.

She was an outstanding cook and always enjoyed cooking for her family who she cared deeply for each and every one of them. She relished each role she had as a caring wife, mother, and grandmother.
