Zelda Claudine Gray

September 25, 1925 — April 27, 2026

Zelda Claudine Gray (Bland), of Abilene, Texas, passed away peacefully on April 27, 2026, at the age of 100, lovingly surrounded by family. Family and friends are invited to attend a funeral service on Saturday, May 2, 2026, at 2:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 1002 Litel St., Buffalo Gap, Texas. Visitation with the family will begin at 1:00 p.m. prior to the service. Interment will immediately follow at Buffalo Gap Cemetery, 3226 FM 89, Buffalo Gap, Texas.

Claudine was born on September 25, 1925, in Stanton, Texas, to Oscar and Mabel Bland (Storey). She spent her early years in Stanton alongside her three siblings, helping her family in the cotton fields where her father farmed, before the family relocated to Merkel, Texas, in 1940. She graduated from Merkel High School in 1944.

On June 10, 1944, Claudine married the love of her life, Norman Gray. Their marriage began with Norman's deployment overseas with the United States Army during World War II, marking the start of a devoted and enduring union that spanned 68 years. Together, they built a life rooted in faith, love, resilience, and family.

Claudine dedicated much of her life to her home and family, raising their two sons with care and devotion. She was known for her quick wit and warm spirit and faithfully served others in her church and community. An excellent cook, she especially enjoyed trying new recipes and preparing large holiday meals for her family to enjoy together. In addition to her role as a homemaker, she was a talented seamstress and quilter. Many of her beautiful creations are cherished by her family and others.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Norman Gray; her parents, Oscar and Mabel Bland; her brother, O.D. Bland; her sisters, Ruby Doan and Billie Boatright; her great-grandson, Alan Reid Crowe; and her great-great-granddaughter, Jacie Gray.

Claudine is survived by her two sons, Doyle Gray and his wife, Barbara, of Abilene, and J.W. Gray and his wife, Melody, of Clyde. She also leaves behind a large and loving family, including granddaughter Gwen Allen and her husband, Ron, of Buffalo Gap; grandson Stephen Gray and his wife, Jana, of Abilene; granddaughter Carrie Crowe and her husband, Alan, of Abilene; grandson Teddy Gray and his wife, Katrice, of Abilene; grandson Jeff Gray of Merkel and his fiancée, Chandrea; granddaughter Melissa Robinson and her husband, Jeff, of Cleveland, Tennessee; step-grandson Kyle Smith and his partner, Victor Udaeta, of Abilene; step-granddaughter Stacy Greenwood, of Abilene. Her legacy continues through her 12 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren.

The family extends sincere thanks to the many caregivers who cared for Claudine with compassion throughout the years, including the staff at Morada and her hospice team, with special appreciation for Annie, her longtime caregiver-a true angel-whose faithful, loving care was an extraordinary blessing to Claudine and her family.

Pallbearers will be Claudine's great-grandsons: Justyn Gray, Cutter Crowe, Austin Gray, Blake Allen, Dillon McMahan, Cannon Gray, and Jackson Gray. Honorary pallbearer will be Alan Reid Crowe.

Claudine's long life was a testament to faith, family, and quiet strength. As her family sang "Victory in Jesus," she passed peacefully into Heaven. A faithful Christian who loved and served others, she was no doubt welcomed with the words, "Well done, good and faithful servant." She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
