Peggy L. (Coats) Conrad, 91, peacefully passed away on the morning of April 1, 2026 in Edmond, OK. A graveside service will be held at Buffalo Gap Cemetery Monday, April 13 at 1:00pm.
Born July 15, 1934 in Chillicothe, TX to Harold "H.V." and Gay (Ketchersid) Coats. Peggy, along with her twin brother Paul, were the youngest of nine children. She graduated from high school in Seagraves, TX and graduated from the University of Texas, Austin with a degree in Education and Library Science. During her time in Austin, she was introduced to her future husband Donald L. "Don" Conrad by her twin brother Paul. Peggy and Don were married June 1, 1956 in Seagraves, TX before moving to Houston for Peggy's first teaching position.
In 1958, the couple moved to Abilene, TX where Peggy taught at Abilene High School. The next year Peggy and Don welcomed their first child. Peggy became a dedicated mother and homemaker as their family expanded to five children.
With a curious mind Peggy engaged in education and lifelong learning. She enjoyed occupations as a Realtor and sales representative for World Book Encyclopedias and Avon. She also completed graduate level courses in Gerontology at ACU.
Peggy spent her last five years in Edmond, OK under the care of her daughter Marsha.
She is preceded in death by husband, Don of 62 years; beloved daughter Andrea Jean Cheek; parents, Harold and Gay Coats; sisters, Martha Hargrove and Ellen Keele; brothers, David, Thomas, Jay, Victor, Wayne, and Paul.
She is survived by four children and their spouses: Marsha and Mark Tygret of Edmond, OK, Charley and Yvonne Conrad of Colorado Springs, CO, Monte and Shawn Conrad of Abilene and Karl Conrad and Gary Cerrone of Cortlandt Manor, NY. Also by grandchildren: Will, Katie, John, Carmen, Spencer, Gary, Rebecca, and Danny and great-grandchildren: Parker, Max and Daisy.
Peggy also leaves behind Gerta Mabe of Tye, TX and Elizabeth Howard of Abilene.
Peggy instilled in her family a spirit of empathy grounded in her faith. She demonstrated what it meant to be a follower of Christ by giving her time, hospitality and talents to others with love and humility. She was a member of Palm Street and Southern Hills Churches of Christ where she and Don served the Lord and their community for more than six decades.
Known for her love of coffee and conversation, Peggy approached life with playfulness. She loved words and literature, always ready to proffer a quotation or turn of phrase whether it be secular or sacred.
Phil 4:8
"...whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things."
