Lois McCleery Fergason

Lois Alberta McCleery Fergason (Grannie) passed from this life on August 6, 2026. She was born October 13, 1925, the 6th child of John and Lillian McCleery, in Tankersley, Texas, just west of San Angelo.

She started school in a one-room schoolhouse in Tankersley and graduated at 16 from San Angelo High School. She went on to graduate from San Angelo Business College, prepared to go to work.

She was married to Floyd E. Fergason and was the proud mother of two children, a son, Michael Ray Fergason and a daughter, Marilyn Ann Fergason (Thompson).

She worked at Goodfellow AFB, for Standard Oil Company and then spent years working for General Telephone Company of the Southwest, from where she retired in 1990, after 30+ years of service. She then filled retirement years working alongside her son, Michael, at the E. H. Danner Museum of Telephony, housed at that time in a historical building on the grounds of Ft. Concho.

She was a faithful Christian and member of Ninth and Main Street Church of Christ from the early 1960’s until moving to Abilene in 2021. At that time, she became a member of Buffalo Gap Church of Christ, where at age 95 she amazed members by taking shorthand notes of each sermon and Bible lesson.

She was loved by so many, her co-workers, those with whom she worshipped, and especially her family members whom she loved deeply. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, John, Bill, Forrest and Seeley, her sisters Irene and Mae, a son, Michael (Mike), son-in-law, Steve Hudman, and granddaughter, Carma Leigh Tippit.

She is survived by her daughter, Marilyn Thompson and husband, Kenneth, of Abilene, Texas; her grandchildren, Laura Todd and husband, Scott, of Wichita Falls, Texas; Kenneth Thompson, and wife, Angie of Buda, Texas; Keith Thompson, of Wichita Falls, Texas; and Kelly Hudman, also of Wichita Falls, Texas; and Luke Tippit, of Abilene, Texas. Also surviving are her 16 great-grandchildren, including their spouses, 10 great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and numerous friends.

If you knew Grannie, you probably heard her often say, “Give thanks in all things.” If she was hurting, she would exclaim, “Oh Joy, oh joy!” She found her joy in the Lord and was always thankful.
