James L. Smith(Smitty) passed from this life on Wednesday, June 25, 2025 at the age of 98. A graveside service will be held on Monday, June 30, 2025 at Iberis Cemetery at 10:00am.
James was born in Merkel, Texas on January 21, 1927 to Henry and Viola Smith. The second of two boys, the family moved around the area picking cotton as sharecroppers. James attended Wylie school until he was able to work full time for the family.
While out one night dancing with friends, James met Kathryn Ricker. The two fell in love and were married on July 16, 1949.
At the age of 24, James was drafted in the United States Army and sent to Germany during WWII.
When he returned to the States after his stint in the Army, James made his home in Abilene and took a job at Childs Ready Mix Concrete where he dedicated 45 years of his life. He worked every position at Childs Concrete. He liked to say that he was a Jack of all trades and a master of none.
James and Kathryn never thought they would be able to have children but after 23 years of marriage, they gave birth to a daughter, Charlotte. Being an only child, James was very protective of her.
Everyone who knew James would describe him as being very stubborn. He liked stuff his way, but wouldn't hesitate to help out a friend in need. He was also a funny guy. He would cut up and make jokes and was known to pull the occasional prank. James enjoyed an ice cold beer and could often be found chewing on a cigar. It was a habit he'd had since the 1940s. Never once did he light or smoke a cigar; he'd just chew on it.
James was preceded in death by his parents, his older brother, Luther, and his beloved wife Kathryn after 65 years of marriage.
He is survived by his only daughter Charlotte and husband Bruce, grandchildren Bryan and Michelle, and great grandchildren Hadley, and Blakely.
James always said, "When I die, just throw me in a pine box and put me in the ground." Sadly, the time has come, James. You will be greatly missed.
