While living in Port Lavaca, he worked as a fire department dispatcher and a radio repairman. He worked for the Port Lavaca Police Department as well and became a sworn Law Enforcement Officer. Ed was a member of Wyndrock Baptist Church in Abilene.
In his spare time, Ed loved to fish and piddle around the house. He had a love of hand work such as crocheting, knitting and wood work. He really was a "jack of all trades".

He is preceded in death by his wife, Dafonal (83), wife, Fay Porter (89), wife, Evelyn Crockett (16); son, Edward Allen Welch; and infant daughter, Linda Carroll Welch; and thirteen brothers and sisters.
