Alvis Eugene Blankenship, 92 years old, passed away on October 11, 2022, in Abilene, after spending the past few months on Hospice Care.
Alvis was born March 18th, 1930, in Wewoka, Oklahoma to Aaron and Bea Blankenship. He graduated from Wewoka High School in 1947. While attending college, Alvis made the decision to join the United States Air Force where he proudly served his country for over 21 years. Upon retirement, Alvis raised Quarter horses, worked as a farrier, and owned his own welding business where he worked very long hours for many years in the oilfield. It was during this time that he met and married his loving wife, Beverly Atwood. Together, they raised three daughters, whom he adored. After the oil boom slowed, Alvis tried his hand at ranching, raising registered Brangus and Angus cattle. When he turned 63, Alvis decided to try a new occupation at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. He worked as a correctional officer for 22 years, testifying to inmates and bringing others closer to the Lord until he retired at the age of 85.
Although Alvis worked hard throughout his life to provide for those closest to him, he always made time for his family. Of all the titles that Alvis held, his most favorite one was being called Pappy. As a Pappy, Alvis regularly spent time watching his grandchildren in all sorts of activities and sports. He proved to be patient, loving, and kind with a touch of childlike mischievousness. Pappy could always be found to pose for a funny picture, crack jokes at others expense and play tricks, particularly on his tolerant wife, Beverly. Above all things, Alvis always showed his family and anyone he spoke with how much he loved the Lord and loved going to church.
Avis was preceded in death by his father Aaron, mother Bea, and two brothers, Charles and Tex.
Alvis is survived by his wife Beverly Blankenship of Lawn, his three daughters, Angela Abbott of Abilene; Darla Quinney and husband Ronald of Lawn; Alesha Burks and husband Doug of Lawn; nine grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
